Crybabies
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has suggested that if Bush replaced Rumsfeld two weeks before the election, voters would not have been as angry about the unpopular Iraq war. Republicans would have gained the boost they needed, according to Gingrich, to retain their majority in the Senate and hold onto 10 to 15 more House seats.Whine. Groan. Piss and moan. And through it all, a reaffirmation of the one thing Republicans have proven to be good at - avoiding the truth.
Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., the outgoing chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, agreed with that assessment...
"[If] Rumsfeld had been out, you bet it would have made a difference," Specter said. "I'd still be chairman of the Judiciary Committee."
The same thought occurred to veteran Rep. Clay Shaw, R-Fla., who was on the verge of becoming chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee...
"It could have made a difference in who is running the Congress," said Shaw.
What's most nauseating about this finger-pointing is the message it telegraphs about the priorities of the current GOP leadership. Face it - the chief concern of Gingrich, Specter, Shaw, et al, is clearly not whether Rumsfeld was a terrible Secretary of Defense, but instead whether better stage management would have given them a bump in the polls.
Their focus is not on the number of troops that may have been lost due to Rummy's continued incompetence while Bush waited to make a change, but is instead solely on how the timing of his departure could have been used for their personal political advantage.
Their analysis is not centered on how the absolute failure of the Republican party's agenda contributed directly to their resounding defeat, but is instead filled with selfish regret that some sleight of hand wasn't utilized early enough to trick the American voter.
What's revealed in these very telling statements is a party whose only priority is, was, and apparently ever shall be the acquisition and retention of power at any cost. Well, here's a news flash, boys. That's what got you thumped on Tuesday - and the timing of Rumsfeld's banishment wouldn't have made a damn bit of difference.
So cry all you want, Newt. Spend your every waking moment fabricating excuses, Arlen. Throw yourself the biggest pity party on record, Clay. Because the fact remains that your well-deserved losses are your own fault, for the way you've allowed your party to drag America's good name through the mud for six long years.
And until you start looking at that truth - and recognizing the need for a fundamental change in your governing approach - you're of no use to the nation or the American people.
That's OK, though, 'cause we've got it covered now. There's a new regime in town that actually cares about the fate of the nation more than push-polls and robo-calls and orchestrated announcements. So until all of the Republican crybabies that remain in office truly comprehend the meaning of "bipartisanship" - and learn how to sincerely play well with others - I have but one suggestion for the lot of them:
Stay out of our way.
