Back from the trenches
Why, on one ballot issue alone, we've gone from a position of 43 points down to 3 points ahead in just five weeks' time. Outstanding.
I guess I'm especially proud that the ads I've worked on around the clock - and, not insignificantly, the people I've worked with - have confined themselves to the truth, and avoided the descent into juvenile mean-spiritedness which seems to have infected most American political advertising these days. Of course, that's what's possible when you actually have facts supporting your position, and aren't reduced to name-calling and mud-slinging and fear-mongering as a tactic, simply because you have nothing else to say.
Which brings us to the Republican Party, a group whose demonstrable incompetence has been matched lately by one of the most disgusting collections of televised slander and slime I can remember during an election season. And believe me, having been around since the Eisenhower years, I've seen a quite a few!
The overall tenor of GOP television commercials this year should, in and of itself, be enough to convince America that the Ruling Party is no longer fit to serve - not that they've been "serving" America in any discernible way to begin with. These snippets of videotape have been a mirror into the rotted soul of a political entity which, in its 12 years of control in Washington, has created domestic and international messes that will not be corrected in my lifetime.
Republicans, who long ago promised a "Contract with America" have instead effected a contract on America, plotting and executing a series of assassinations, murdering one by one the essential rights and freedoms that had defined this nation for hundreds of years before their tenure.
Likewise, a Republican Administration that convinced the gullible it was going to "restore honor and integrity to the White House" - as if either were really missing - has instead defined "honor" as fiscal irresponsibility, rampant cronyism, and the advocacy of torture as official U.S. policy, and has somehow interpreted "integrity" to mean lying the country into a needless foreign invasion at the expense of tens of thousands of lives.
So I'm honestly glad to see the approach Republican ads (and their supporters) have taken over the past few months, because they so clearly define the core values which the term "Republican" has come to represent. Small-mindedness. Viciousness. Disregard for the truth. Hysteria. Desperation. Hypocrisy. Lust for power.
And underlying everything, a fundamental disrespect for the American voter.
As I said, I'm proud of the work I've done this fall. I'd like to doubt that the creators of those odious "The Stakes" ads feel the same way - but sadly, if recent history is any indication, I'm sure the Rovian minds behind that piece of propaganda believe fervently that the only way to keep the unwashed rabble in line is through misinformation, deception, and its own brand of domestic terrorism.
For Liberals to merely regain control of Congress in a "squeaker" isn't justice enough for this crowd. Let's instead reward the GOP's continued cowardice, repulsiveness, and stubborn idiocy with a crushing defeat on Tuesday.

You are so blind you can not see the forest through the trees. I liked what you wrote in the first two paragraphs, but after that you sound like a person who just makes things up because its advantagous to do so. If the repuplicans have turned nasty in the last month its only after six years of putting up with unpresedented nastiness from dems. It has become so obvious that dems only care about dems and not the country its self. Your opinions derive from nothing else than to counter bush.Thats it in a nut shell isnt it. After reading this a second time I just get more upset. I would love to talk to you in person. I know that is something someone like you would hate because I would reduce your opinions into convaluded uttrances, you simpleton. Everyone of your opinions is mindnumbingly stupid.
Anonymous,
Let's start with the obvious. Contrary to your opinion, I'd love to talk to you as well, if not in person, then through some form of correspondence.
But, as usual with right-wing trolls, the fact that you've left no e-mail, or personal blog site, or even bothered to think of a screen name to accompany your diatribe belies the cowardice at the heart of all Republican "debate" - mainly, that you're not interested in having one.
"Anonymous" pretty much says it all about the courage of your convictions.
What's also par for the course is the "pot calling the kettle black" syndrome that is the theme song of today's Conservatives and Bush apologists.
"Unpresedented (sic) nastiness from dems"?! It is Republicans who've spent the past 5 years calling Liberals "traitors." It is Republicans who've characterized honest dissent as "aiding the terrorists." It is Republicans who've relentlessly smeared and slandered their political opponents, and who readily spew accusations of "obstructionism", "hating the troops", and "anti-Americanism."
And it is Republicans who count among their allies and spokespersons the despicable Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, and Michael Savage, whose unsupported vitriol is a mattter of public record.
"Dems only care about dems and not the country its self (sic)"?!?! This is almost too ludicrous to even warrant a response. Your "heroes" have spent 6 years dismantling our Constitution, raping the environment, favoring the rich over the poor and middle class, slashing social services, slashing veterans' benefits, waging war on science, and lying this nation into a war that's needlessly taken the lives of almost 3,000 fellow Americans.
Ask the victims of Katrina how much your party cares about the country itself. Ask the millions who've lost jobs, lost insurance, lost pensions, lost homes. Ask the communities that suffer each day from polluted water and air, from factory closures and outsourcing, from social restrictions enabled by a theocracy out of control.
If you believe my opinions are "nothing else than to counter bush (sic)" I couldn't be prouder. Because the only "mindnumbingly (sic) stupid" thing on display here (besides your spelling proficiency) is the fact that you could continue to support a party that's brought this nation to ruin.
Bob,
I am so much in agreement with you, and so happy that you have the facts and literary ability to express them so much better than I can.
Keep it up!
