Twisted logic
The gay marriage debate is one of those freaky American moments where a cauldron of national fears and anxieties gets projected onto an issue, elevating it to a great symbolic level where it doesn't belong. What's really going on is that opponents of gay marriage see the struggle as the last defense against the radicalization of America. They live in fear that the virus of homosexuality will infect their own families. They're tortured by the prospect that their own children or their grandchildren will turn out queer, and the best way to deal with that is to demonize the enemy, and through that separate yourself from it.I'm tired. Tired of being ashamed to call myself "American." Tired of a Conservative "agenda" that seems devoted to moving our society backwards in time. Tired of a nation whose "leaders" are dedicated to prejudice and fear.
Over our history, our basic "live and let live" instincts have occasionally been distorted by zealots. Zealots and the fear of zealots can influence legislators - and have done so at ugly times - which is why the New York Court of Appeals Decision is so dangerous.
Tired to the bone. And so should we all be.

I very much agree with the thoughts you express here. I recently posted in my own blog (http://techsurvival.blogspot.com/2006/07/countering-bias.html) on the matter of prejudice and importance of starting with our own biases - understanding them and actively working to set them aside. I even include a link to a tool that helps measure bias.
On the good side, I also see evidence that doing this helps improve matters considerably and this gives me great hope, making me far less tired...
