Protecting the unborn

No surprises here. Today's Washington Post reports on the Bush Administration's "respect" for the unvarnished dissemination of vital scientific knowledge:

Scientists doing climate research for the federal government say the Bush administration has made it hard for them to speak forthrightly to the public about global warming. The result, the researchers say, is a danger that Americans are not getting the full story on how the climate is changing.

Employees and contractors working for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, along with a U.S. Geological Survey scientist working at an NOAA lab, said in interviews that over the past year administration officials have chastised them for speaking on policy questions; removed references to global warming from their reports, news releases and conference Web sites; investigated news leaks; and sometimes urged them to stop speaking to the media altogether.

Iraq isn't the only war this President is waging. Mr. Bush has maintained a steady assault on the environment (and any facts pertaining to it) since seizing power over 5 years ago. So much for his concern about the long term safety of the American people - or as we like to call his record, "No Polluter Left Behind."

Wouldn't it be logical to think - just on the wild and unimaginable chance that fouling our atmosphere with avoidable toxins might somehow be... oh, kind of a selfish, gluttonous, embarrassingly bad thing to do - that those compassionate Conservative skeptics of global warming might want to "protect the lives of the unborn" who will soon have to deal with a dying planet?

Aren't they the same ones who've admonished us relentlessly to "err on the side of life"?
