Life's rich tapestry
Scientists have discovered fossils of a 375-million-year-old fish, a large scaly creature not seen before, that they say is a long-sought missing link in the evolution of some fishes from water to a life walking on four limbs on land. Now, for as long as I can remember, I've not been a fan of religion. Any. But if there is an omniscient Creator, isn't this amazing discovery actually just one more sign of Her genius to those who do believe? I've never understood the "either/or" nature of the debate between evolution and faith. Church and state, yes. But "Darwin versus God"?
In two reports today in the journal Nature, a team of scientists led by Neil H. Shubin of the University of Chicago say they have uncovered several well-preserved skeletons of the fossil fish in sediments of former streambeds in the Canadian Arctic, 600 miles from the North Pole...
Other scientists said that in addition to confirming elements of a major transition in evolution, the fossils were a powerful rebuttal to religious creationists, who have long argued that the absence of such transitional creatures are a serious weakness in Darwin's theory.
So I ask those sincerely religious Americans that see evolution as an assault on their belief in a higher power, simply, "Why?" And please, none of that "6000 years old" nonsense. Do you really presume to know God's definition of a "day"? Let's face it, if you were sincerely committed to interpreting the Bible literally, you'd wholeheartedly support polygamy, child sacrifice, and slavery - and wouldn't be so adamant about keeping the mall open on the Sabbath!
I mean, think about it - the awe-inspiring wonder of cellular design, the ability of life to change and grow and adapt, the absolute brilliance of a blueprint which allowed a primitive organism that could only communicate in guttural grunts to develop into a thinking, rational being with the intellectual inventiveness to put a man on the moon. If that doesn't verify the existence of forces greater than our ability to comprehend them - whatever one chooses to call it - then I don't know what does.
Besides, that never-ending pattern of genetic improvement always gave me hope that humankind would keep evolving into something still better. Good Lord, we should all hope so. 'Cause it would be depressing to think that we'll forever remain the overwhelmingly petty, partisan, uninformed, violent, divided-by-faithracegender jackasses that roam the Earth today.

Obviously, spam responses are also an unfortunate part of life's rich tapestry. Not much evidence of divinity there...
What's weird is that the blogspam can't be a bot, because you have the authentication on. Otherwise, great post. Except for that timeline. Everybody knows you can go see dinosaur and human tracks in the same streambed. And all those really really old things? Satan put them there that old, to confuse the scientists.
(wink)
Well said, Bob. There's nothing mutually exclusive about evolution and religion except to someone who feels threatened by one or the other.
Really beautiful post. The complexity of life IS the divinity that spirituality searches to articulate.
Bob,
I haven't been here for a few weeks it seems. I forgot how much I like what you say, and you say it well.
cyrus,
also articulate.
it's so weird that fundies have to present it as an either/or scenario
Hey Bob, great work. I feel as if I'm beginning to really understand the religious right in the proper context.
As far as I can tell, they believe in a form of Christianity, a sort of Rapture Cult, that believes that Jews and Christians are the boss and anyone who tries to hurt their leaders must be of Satan and therefore the enemy. They help get this present lunatic elected, and he becomes their representative on Earth. Yet for real Christians and people of true moral conscience, he is practically the Antichrist, and quite certainly a very unholy person, capable of great evil.
For those who don't believe in evil, consider this: Adolf Hitler was born a human being, yet he became a monster. Where does that drive come from? What creates the sort of man that sanctions wholesale slaughter for profit? How does such a man live with himself?
I hope and pray that someone is able to reach the long-dormant soul of George W. Bush and pull him back long enough for him to turn himself in. Perhaps then we would have some sort of chance at a new evolution of our democracy. I fear however that Bush's goon squad will steal the next election and enact some form of martial law.
You all ready to go to Canada? Or maybe even farther out? I worry that we may not have the numbers to undo this terrible mess.
Come on over to the website and see the interview I'm posting with Dahr Jamail, independent Iraq war correspondent, and tell me if you agree with his assessment of the corporate media.
Can we win without a friendly media? We've got to create what doesn't yet exist.
I'm not a big fan of religion, either. But I think there is a difference between religion and faith. And the more I read about science and particularly the intricate way our universe is put together to ensure life can exist, (plus some other very freaky but very cool quantum physics facts), the more I think that there must be *something* out there.
By the way, I found you on blogexplosion.
And what's with the comment spam? I mean, does ANYBODY ever actually look up those links?
I suppose they must otherwise the spammers wouldn't bother. It always amazes me that they are still sending around those banking scams where they ask you to log in a 'update your details'. SOMEONE must be falling for it or they wouldn't still be bothering!!
