Still ringing true

I'm finally back from Virginia, where I had the delightful pleasure of seeing my oldest daughter star in The Will Rogers Follies - and the distinct discomfort of driving through long stretches of rural America where the only strong radio stations are those featuring Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh as providers of topical information. I'm still shuddering.

It occurred to me as I sat in the theater, just how timely and relevant (unfortunately) Rogers' 70-year-old observations still are in our time. A short sampling:
"There's no trick to being a humorist when you have the whole government working for you."

"[The] Republican Convention opened with a prayer. If the Lord can see His way clear to bless the Republican Party the way it's been carrying on, then the rest of us ought to get it without even asking."

"Now if there is one thing that we do worse than any other nation, it is try and manage somebody else's affairs."

"If Stupidity got us into this mess, then why can't it get us out?"

"Anything important is never left to the vote of the people. We only get to vote on some man; we never get to vote on what he is to do."

"We always want the best man to win an election. Unfortunately, he never runs."
And, I must admit, a personal favorite:
"I'm not a member of any organized political party, I'm a Democrat!"
Is it politics itself that's remained the same for over seven decades? Or is it just this partiicular group in Washington right now about whom these observations still ring so true?

We need ten thousand Will Rogers in public life today. Can you imagine how easy it would be to do the right thing if Puffy, the White Stripes, and Sarah Jessica Parker were all politically active? I swear, the talented have become wedded to wealth instead of the people that got them where they are. I hope something changes real soon.
