Here's another
great editorial by freelance writer Lynne Glasner concerning
the Justice Department's impending counter-offensive against those who outed the President's illegal surveillance activities. Ms. Glasner notes:
In its own pages on February 13, the Times noted the conservative attack machines that are about to come out of the woodwork; demands for a "vigorous investigative effort to find and prosecute whoever disclosed classified information" will follow. The trial balloon is being sent up by the neo-con's Commentary magazine, suggesting that the Times may be prosecuted for violations of the Espionage Act: "What the New York Times has done is nothing less than to compromise the centerpiece of our defensive efforts in the war on terrorism."
If Bush and Company succeed in slapping down the
Times and prosecuting the courageous individuals who revealed this illegal activity -
without, I might add, disclosing any real operational details that could be construed as "aiding the enemy" - it might just put the final nail in the coffin of our demand for accountability from this Administration. And
that we can simply not allow to happen.
