Think Progress notes that Senator Arlen Specter, appearing Sunday on ABC's This Week, said that "if it is determined that Bush broke the law, both impeachment and criminal prosecution are legitimate remedies." Read more here.

As Mr. Loeb concludes, "Democrats have to take the risk of standing strong, and we as ordinary citizens have to do all we can to convince them to do so."

Well, let us say that the old American republic is well and truly dead. The institutions that we thought were eternal proved not to be.

And that goes for the three departments of government, and it also goes for the Bill of Rights.

So we're in uncharted territory.
