Robert Kennedy Jr. writes in the Los Angeles Times about America's anti-torture tradition. As he accurately notes, "[W]hat remains shocking about this embarrassing and distasteful national debate is that we had to have it at all."

The Nation's John Nichols praises Senator Russ Feingold, and his ongoing fight against the civil liberties abuses contained in the Patriot Act. Mr. Nichols observes that since 2001, "Feingold [has] stood alone in defense of the principle that it was possible to combat terrorism and protect the rights of Americans." As yesterday's events on the Senate floor showed, Senator Feingold isn't alone any more.

And Derrick Z. Jackson of The Boston Globe weighs in on the President's recent acknowledgement of Iraqi casualties - but laments the fact that, "Without evidence of weapons, [Bush] would still order a war that kills thousands of innocent people."
